SDVoE Delivers Low-Latency Distribution at Furuno Electric’s Showroom that Reproduces the Wheel House of the Ships

Founded in 1938, Furuno Electric Co. produces marine navigation and communications equipment, including radar systems, fish finders, and navigational instruments. Headquartered in Hyogo, Japan, Furuno Electric has affiliated subsidiaries in major cities around the world. Furuno Electric is globally recognized for commercializing the world’s first fish finder, an instrument to locate fish underwater by detecting reflected pulses of sound energy. Today, Furuno Electric is a trusted source of equipment for a wide variety of ships, including large merchant vessels, fishing boats, and recreational boats.

Challenge

Reliable information distribution is vital in safely and efficiently navigating vessels to enter and depart a port. Wheel House collects information regarding the vessel’s operation schedule using AIS, radar, and monitoring cameras. Additionally, operators communicate with vessels utilizing radiotelephone to grasp the movement of the ships and distribute the information to port personnel.

Recently, Furuno Electric opened a showroom, the Communication Bridge, to showcase various solutions that contribute to information distribution to ensure the safety of the port area and smooth management of vessel traffic. Furuno Electric’ s industry-leading solutions are displayed throughout the showroom. Notably, Furuno Electric was looking for a way to effectively display a variety of information, such as navigation equipment such as RADAR and ECIDS, as well as new products, using multiple large displays used to display the simulator.

Solution

In March 2022, Furuno Electric completed a large-scale renovation of all the spaces on the ground floor of the Communication Bridge. The renovation features a panoramic view of the IBS Exhibition Room, which reproduces the Wheel House of a ship in one corner of the communication bridge. Furuno Electric selected IMAGENICS’ NEX-SMART media over IP systems to distribute high-quality, 4K content across multiple displays. In the IBS Exhibition Room, Furuno Electric integrated NEX-SMART to facilitate content distribution for radars, nautical charts, engine operation status, and other necessary operational information.

NEX-SMART, powered by SDVoE technology, is the core video display equipment throughout the Communication Bridge. NEX-SMART can distribute HDMI signals up to 4K60 over CAT6 cables up to 100 meters. In addition to broadcasting audio and video signals, NEX-SMART can support LAN and multi-distribution configurations. NEX-SMART can be utilized with controllers and applications to increase distribution capabilities.

IMAGENICS, a Japanese developer and manufacturer of audio and video solutions, harnesses the power of SDVoE technology to provide a stable, low-latency video solution for the company’s NEX-SMART series of products. Built on SDVoE technology, NEX-SMART includes CAT6A, single-mode optical fiber, and multi-mode optical fiber transmitters and receivers, control units, and Windows configuration applications.
